About Alex Weinzierl
Alex Weinzierl currently serves as the Director of Bands in the Mount Vernon School District where he directs the Concert Band, “Marching Mountaineers,” Mountaineer Jazz Band, teaches middle school courses, and oversees the entire band program grades 6-12. Originally from Kansas City, MO, Alex graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Certificates in both Jazz Studies and Multicultural Studies in 2023. Alex has had a variety of educational and musical experiences throughout his career that continue to shape his teaching philosophy. He is focused on providing enriching educational experiences that allow music to positively affect students long after they have left the classroom. Alex acknowledges the incredibly impactful role that a teacher has in a students life and works to build and maintain healthy, positive, and long-lasting relationships with all of his students.
During his three years at Mt. Vernon, Alex’s primary focus has been creating a positive environment that students continually choose to be a part of while raising the standard of excellence of the program. The band program’s numbers have monumentally increased over the course of three years, from 110 in Alex’s first year to 180 in his current year. Both beginning band enrollment and retention have grown exponentially, with continued upward trajectory estimated. The program has expanded to add multiple facets and opportunities available to students. Mt. Vernon’s first competitive jazz band began in Alex’s second year, and has quickly grown into one of the superior jazz ensembles in Southwest Missouri, earning consistent top ratings at jazz festivals in Missouri and Kansas. Under Alex’s supervision, the Mountaineer Bands program began its first Winter Guard Program, which has already achieved early success in MCCGA circuits. Alex has carried on the tradition of Mount Vernon’s outstanding high school concert band, continuing to earn Superior ratings at State Large Group evaluations and even being invited to perform alongside collegiate ensembles. Students of the Mt. Vernon band program has acclaimed individual success, with numerous students earning All-District, All-Conference, and All-State Band honors, as well as District and State success in Solo & Ensemble. The marching band at Mt. Vernon, the “Marching Mountaineers”, has taken off during Alex’s time, earning consistent 1st place in-class finishes and captions awards as well as record-high finals placements.
As a conductor, in addition to his responsibilities at Mt. Vernon, Mr. Weinzierl had the distinct pleasure of serving as an undergraduate guest conductor with both the University Band and Symphonic Band during his time at the University of Missouri. He has studied conducting with Dr. Christian Noon, Dr. Amy Knopps, and Dr. Stephen Rogers Radcliffe. An active participant in conducting symposiums, Alex has worked with established educators and conductors like Dr. Mallory Thompson, Professor Gary Hill, Dr. John Lynch, Dr. John Zastouphil, and Dr. Kevin Geraldi, to name a few. As a performer, Mr. Weinzierl played trumpet in the MU Wind Ensemble, Concert Jazz Band, and principal trumpet for the University Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Dr. Radcliffe. He also performed with and founded the Mizzou Student Brass Quintet as well as participated in jazz combos, among other chamber ensembles.
Alex is highly involved in the marching arts. Since 2025, he has served as the Brass Caption Head for the Colt Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps. Prior to this appointment, he marched with the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps in 2021 and subsequently served on the Colts Brass Staff in the Summer of 2024. During his time at MU, Alex served two years as a Trumpet Section Leader and two years as a Drum Major for Marching Mizzou. In addition to serving as a brass and visual technician for band programs in Columbia Public Schools, Alex is a graduate of Smith Walbridge Clinics, America’s oldest marching band leadership camp, earning his “Drum Major First Class” in the mace style as well as being awarded “Outstanding Conductor” in the advanced conducting class in the summer of 2022. In addition to his responsibilities with the Colt Cadets, Alex currently oversees, directs, and leads the “Marching Mountaineers”, Mt. Vernon High School’s award-winning marching ensemble.
Before Alex’s appointment as Director of Bands at Mt. Vernon High School in the fall of 2023, he student taught in the Platte County School District in the spring of 2023 with Dr. Matthew Bonsignore. Alex holds professional affiliations with the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA), and the Missouri Bandmasters Association (MBA). Alex happily resides in Republic, Missouri with his wife, Emily and their dog, Remi.
